Beach Towel

At the beach
it is almost impossible
to make your towel
lie flat
no matter how many times
you shake it out
billow it in the breeze
and slowly
by inches
lower it to the sand
a sudden gust
always catches a corner
and having gotten hold
twists the towel
in half
and throws it in your face
perseverance does no good
there is always the wind
and so I give up
crawl across the towel
lie prostrate
my hands and feet anchoring the corners
defeated
I laugh
realizing
this position
will someday be imitated
before my lord
who will
I pray
quiet the wind.
